Isle of Wight Hackney Carriage Tariffs

On the Isle of Wight it is the IOW Council who decide what fares and tariffs island taxi companies are able to charge in their licensed Hackney Carriage taxis. The taxi meters are programmed by specific garages on the island and then sealed so they cannot be altered or tampered with. As such, all Isle of Wight Hackney Carriage taxis have identical metered fares, which you can view on the table below. Click the table below for a full-size version.

What’s the difference between a Hackney Carriage Taxi and a Private Hire Vehicle?

Hackney Carriages (Taxis)

Taxis can ply for hire in the street and at taxi ranks. Journeys do not have to be pre-booked.

A licenced taxi on the Isle of Wight must display a white plate on the rear of the vehicle and a smaller version in the front windscreen. These plates display the licence plate number, the registration number of the vehicle and the number of persons the vehicle may lawfully carry.

Private Hire Vehicles

Private hire vehicles are NOT taxis and cannot ply for hire in the street or at taxi ranks. Journeys must be pre-booked, normally by phone or in person.

A licenced private hire vehicle on Isle of Wight must display a yellow plate on the rear of the vehicle and a smaller version in the front windscreen. In addition, yellow door stickers must be fixed to each of the front doors. The plate and the door stickers display the number of the vehicle, license expiry date, the registration number of the vehicle and the number of persons the vehicle may lawfully carry.

Fares for private hire vehicles are not regulated by the council so the cost of a journey will normally be agreed with the operator prior to the commencement of the journey.
