A WET AND BLUSTERY SUNDAY – 05/01/2025

Good morning, everyone! The Met Office is promising us a wet and blustery Sunday! Temperatures will will be much warmer, though and hover around 12 degrees C all day, accompanied by moderate SW (becoming SSW) winds. Wind gusts in certain areas will reach up to 47mph.

I’ve just got back from taking my son to Ryde and there’s a lot of water on the roads and many areas are flooded, so do take good care on the roads and please remember to test your brakes after coming through flood water.

Due to flooding, Island Roads have closed Southford Lane, Whitwell, at its junctions with Newport Road and Whitwell Road.

The Environment Agency has issued an immediate flood alert for the St John’s area of Ryde, Lukely Brook at Carisbrooke and the River Medina in Newport this morning (Sunday) following a night of heavy and intense rain, with 24mm recorded in just 10 hours.

It’s said that the water level in the Monktonmead Brook at St John’s Railway Station is high and rising.

From 07:30 this morning, water will begin to flow across the railway tracks, upstream of St John’s Station. This is likely to result in the suspicion of Island Line trains and could impact surrounding homes and businesses.

With rain set to continue to affect the area over the next 6 hours, with a further 10mm of rain expected on top of the 24mm recorded at Ryde in the past 10 hours, water levels are unlikely to fall until 10:00.

Locals are being told to consider moving vehicles from depots located next to the river and railway line.

A flood alert has also been issued for the Eastern Yar, which is high and rising.

All island travel services appear to be running to schedule, as of 09.30 this morning.

Friendly Cabs is closed today and will re-open tomorrow at 06.00. We wish you all a super Sunday! 01983 506975
